Together for Good

Monday, 25 December 2017 14:36 Last Updated on Monday, 25 December 2017 14:40 Written by Administrator

All Children deserve to be safe and protected

Vulnerable, socially isolated families often don’t have anywhere for their children to stay in times of crisis. Children can be left in unsafe situations, increasing the risk of abuse and neglect. Together, along with the church, we support and encourage parents in distress. Our trained network of families provide a safe place for children so that parents are able to regroup and gain stability.

In addition to crisis care, Together for Good offers ongoing opportunities to come alongside isolated mothers. We build lasting relationships to ensure parents are supported, encouraged and loved. Demonstrating Christ’s love in meaningful ways, our goal is to ensure that vulnerable mothers and children should never walk alone

How do we help?

We understand how overwhelming life can be when there is no one to call during times of crisis and need. And we know all parents need supportive, caring relationships. Our team has collectively worked with vulnerable families for over 30 years, facilitating the hosting of up to 200 children in safe homes each year during times of family crisis.

We create pathways for the church to come alongside vulnerable children and families in Christ-centered ministry.

Spirit of the Arrowhead - I don't think an NFL linebacker could have done what Lisa and Joy did.

Although I didn't have anything to do with the decision of the Spirit Award, I have a pretty good idea why it went to Lisa. I am one of the snowmobile volunteers and have had the pleasure of seeing Lisa on the course the past few years. All of the participants are familiar with Lisa and her positive attitude and encouragement throughout the race over the years but this year she took it a step further.

I was called out on Wednesday morning to check on some runners and on my way out I came across Joy who was having some trouble 5 miles from the finish. After pointing her in the right direction I found Lisa a half mile back and explained to her that Joy was having a hard time. Knowing that Lisa is a nurse I asked her to check on Joy when she caught up to her and I went on to pick up a racer 12 miles out that could not continue to the finish. On my trip back I came around the corner 4 miles from the finish and found Lisa and Joy travelling together......with Lisa pushing her sled and after already covering 131 miles, pulling Joy's sled behind her........with Joy riding on the sled.

I couldn't believe my eyes. Lisa is jeopardizing her own finish to try to help another racer because she knew how important it was to Joy being her 3rd attempt. Lisa told me she was ok for now but could I please check back again. I continued on to bring Bonnie back to the casino and received a call from Lisa saying that she was having a difficult time with the extra load (imagine that.....) I rode out and found them now 2 miles out. I talked to Joy and asked if she could possibly make the last 2 miles on her own. Lisa offered to pull Joy's sled to the finish and stay with her and the two of them came across the finish line together. In my years of being involved with the Arrowhead, this is the most generous gesture I have ever witnessed between competitors. Congratulations to Lisa for her second finish and to Joy for her first and again to Lisa for her well deserved Spirit of the Arrowhead Award.

2014 ARROWHEAD 135 COMIN AT YA

Monday, 15 April 2013 10:02 Last Updated on Sunday, 15 December 2013 16:30 Written by Dave Pramann

International Falls hit -30 Degrees F last night.  We hope you are prepared for this year's race.  Shown below is Carla from Brazil training on the trail this week.  We have had lots of snow and cold so the trail should be in great shape.

The Arrowhead Ultra is included in "World's ULTIMATE Running Races" (Japanese version) which will be available soon on Amazon.

Make your list, and check it twice, and make sure you have all the mandatory gear for the race.  We do a very thorough gear check.

Looking for a way to punish yourself?  Apply elsewhere.

As expected, the 2014 Arrowhead Ultra 135 roster filled in record time.  We are amazed at the talent of the applicants.  There will be a lot of competition on the trail this winter.  We are holding a few spots for elite race veterans (multiple finishes or top finishers) who are on the trail and have not sent in their applications yet.  The roster will be posted shortly.

See you in a couple months.

2014 Arrowhead 135 race dates set for last week January. Check-in Jan 25/26, race start Monday Jan 27th, 2014 7AM International Falls, Minnesota. No major changes expected, just more good clean hard fun.

Applications for Arrowhead 135 veterans will be taken starting 9-1-13. Applications for new racers will be taken starting 10-1-13. We are expecting a full field of racers this year, please ensure you list your qualifications on your application as this may be a factor in determining the race roster.

The application download on the Race Registration page has been updated for 2014.

Please note that we will not be offering a free entry to the ITI for race winners this year.  This was done the past couple years to promote the ITI in Alaska, this promotion was a huge success with 16 AH135 racers participating in the ITI in 2013 (with 100% finish rate!!)

SPRINGS AROUND CORNER, Really.

Couple quick 2013 Arrowhead 135 Truth Stranger Than Fiction Items:

...warmest start temp in nine yr race history at ~25F.

...largest starting field ever at exactly 135.

...first ever father/son finishers with Chris and Mark Scotch!

...two additional Arrowhead A'trois Finishers: Ken Krueger/Eric Dalgaard making total of 5 awards in race history.

...three out of last four years have seen long 3-man cycling breakaways leading up to final finish stretch. All three broke course record.

...second lowest finish rate in race history at ~35%. 2007 less than 25%.

...first year significant precipitation event. 8-10" heavy wet snow/sleet/ice pellets, areas biggest snowfall of season, mid-race. Not precisely forecasted, especially by race director: B.S. Meteorology UW-Madison 1979 Synoptic Specialty.

...unfortunately no women finishers. Many made noble/valient attempts.

SAFE TRAVELS!

Hope your travels to Frostbite Falls go well, things are looking good for adventure. Last minute updates: All we need to see at gear-check is required list gear, not the bike/sled,etc. Volunteer meeting for all nice volunteers Backus 2:30pm Sunday prior to racer meeting at 4PM next door. Right now looks like we missed good Arctic chill by couple days, nothing looming huge far as weather factors at the start, but that has history of changing at Arrowhead!  Midweek might be interesting and a Full Moon.....WeeHaw!

HOMESTRETCH...WEEHAW!

Arrowhead's got snow, some grooming, good thing I-Falls way north cause we got some cold weather and more coming too. 20+ states, ~7 countries represented with best winter ultra-fatbikers on planet, experienced, fast and deep field on foot and some skiers hoping for something more than -20F!  Likely 135 racers at gun.

Couple things: 2013 Gear check Sat Jan. 26th Noon-6PM and Sun 10AM-2PM at Backus Community Center (900 5th Street Internatl Falls, MN 56649), same place as last couple years pre-race meeting.  same  ) Street parking or big lot west side of Backus...come in west parking lot door easiest.  This years pre-race meeting across street to the east at Aquinas School/Church stage-gym at 4PM Sunday.  See race rules for more, not much else new but do have Chili provided 1st Checkpoint Gateway by nice folks Minnesota Sedation Dental. Since most of us have drawers overstuffed with race T-Shirts we're giving free Arrowhead 2013 original tote/duffel bag to racers this year, sweet Storkamp designed Arrowhead moisture-wicking shirts for sale modest price.

Our spare rooms filling up with race equipment and fine schwag for drawing, trophy making party planned next week though we are hoping -30F and soft trail so we hardly have to make any, HA!  Thanks to all volunteers/racers who make this race happen especially Don Clark, John Storkamp, John Spartz, Todd Gabrielson, Al Lauer, Tony Oveson, Russ Loucks, Gregg Pattison, Jerald Netland, most all have been making the race what it is every year we've been coming since 2006. Many others!

See you in I-Falls.
